It’s getting loads of use and holding up well. Many frogs, toads, fireflies, caterpillars, and other bugs have had temporary housing in this little habitat. It’s much easier to see into than previous habitats we’ve had. The size seemed a bit small at first, but it’s not a permanent home, so it definitely works as it is. Just gives my son a chance to observe, photograph, & ID various critters - he is a naturalist at heart, so this thing is a must have item for our family. :-) The light is a nice feature. The air holes are great but not large enough to let the various critters we have observed out of the habitat. I liked the door better on a previous model we had, but all in all this habitat has more pros than that one did. So thumbs up from this nature loving family. 👍🏼👍🏼
This has a built in light. It has a handy carrying handle. Takes a little practice to snap the lid on secure. My kids love making dirt/leaves/bark habitats for creepy crawly critters and they love turning on that little lamp feature too. I do like I can rinse out the base and the air holes are a good size. Just enough for the worms and bugs to breathe ....but not large enough to escape. Thank goodness! I do make my kiddos release their little bugs back into nature. These little critter carriers keep them busy for a long time. I tried buying one to share....and quickly ordered a second one.
I almost did not purchase this tiny cute critter cage because of the reviews about the lid. I am assuming the lid is only an issue when a toddler is running and jumping with the cage. I can't figure out why else so many people had lid issues. I do not have lid issues, but we also do not run or jumble the bug cage, especially when it is occupied. So purchase according to how your kid plays. Currently we are housing a woolly bear caterpillar. The cage is small, so I would not make this anything forever home, but it is perfect for short term guests. The light is an adorable touch. I like that you can open a small hatch on the lid to drop things in.
I ordered this for my 6 year old son who is obsessed with rolli polli right now. Well any other bugs too. I gave him one of my good Mason jars at first but he dropped and broke it eventually. So i wanted something safer for him. I came cross this critter box with a light. Unfortunately before he could try it out his little sister got a hold of the top. Yes it is true the top does not stay on well. But that is probably so that you can let what ever critter you caught go quickly. Anyway she got it first and removed the little cap on the top. She lost or hid somewhere. She is 2 and like a little squirrel. Overall this box is for older kids that can keep up with stuff not for 2 year old critters kids that like to hide stuff. Overall I like it and would order again.
Excellent Bug Buddy. I love all the cool features and there is loads of room for my little friends. The size is perfect for the insects I find in my home during winter. I use to keep them in pickle jars until spring when I let them go, but this is so much nicer. The night light is very bright and the carrying handle is a plus. The top is secure just don't pick the barn up by the sides - it causes the lid to pop off. With a little ingenuity and TCL this little critter barn can become an insectopia.
I usually find anywhere between 10 to 15 stink bugs in my home during the winter months. They find their way in during the dogs days in August and come out when they are hungry in October. As I have a kind heart, I keep them until spring. I feed them oranges, apples, cherries and bananas. They seem to enjoy oranges the best and feed 3 to 4 times daily. I grow oat grass for my cats and put that on the bottom - it's purpose is to bring them close to the outdoors and to also catch the bug droppings. The longer I keep them the friendlier and smarter they become. I think with the proper adult supervision, a child could use this critter barn to learn to care for an insect like a small pet.
